Window Frames and Casings
The frames, casings, sills, and aprons surrounding each window are among the most visible trim elements on any home. They take direct sun exposure, catch water, and are subject to movement as the surrounding wood expands and contracts with Northern Virginia’s humidity and temperature cycles. Window trim is also where caulk failure tends to show up first — small cracks at the joint between the trim and siding that let moisture in and cause paint failure from behind.
Door Frames and Surrounds
Like window trim, door frames and surrounding casings are focal points on any home’s facade. Corner Boards
Corner boards are the vertical trim pieces at the outside corners of the home, where two walls meet. They’re structural detail that also serves as a visual anchor for the siding. On wood and fiber cement siding homes throughout Northern Virginia, corner boards require caulking and proper paint to prevent water intrusion at the seam.
Shutters
Exterior shutters — whether functional louvered shutters or purely decorative panels — are part of the trim vocabulary of the home. They’re typically painted to match or contrast with the primary trim color. On older vinyl shutters that have faded unevenly, fresh paint can restore their visual impact significantly. On wood shutters, proper priming and finishing are important to longevity.
Decorative Molding and Architectural Details
Many Northern Virginia homes, particularly colonials and craftsman-style homes, have decorative frieze boards, dentil molding, brackets, and other architectural details that are technically trim. Why Trim Painting Is Different from Siding Painting
The main siding field of a house can often be painted efficiently with rollers or airless sprayers over large surface areas. Trim work doesn’t allow for that kind of speed. Every linear foot of window casing, fascia board, and door frame requires hand brushwork to ensure proper coverage in corners and along edges, clean lines against adjacent surfaces, and the precise control needed to avoid getting paint on glass, brick, siding, or masonry.
This is work that rewards experience. Clean, crisp trim makes a house look intentional and well-maintained. Sloppy trim makes the whole house look messy, regardless of how good the field coats are.
Prep Work for Exterior Trim
On many homes — especially those more than fifteen years old — exterior trim needs significant preparation before any paint goes on. Here’s what that involves:
Cleaning: Trim surfaces accumulate dirt, mildew, and chalked paint residue that will prevent new paint from bonding. We clean trim surfaces before any other work begins.
Removing failing paint: Any areas where paint has lifted, bubbled, or is no longer adhering are addressed before repainting. Painting over failing paint produces more failing paint.
Caulking: This is perhaps the most important prep step for trim. Every joint, gap, and seam around windows, doors, and where trim meets siding gets fresh, paintable exterior caulk. In Virginia’s climate, caulk is what keeps water out of the wood — and water infiltration is what drives most exterior paint failures.
Priming bare wood: Any spot where bare wood is exposed gets spot-primed before finish coats go on. On new wood repairs or areas where all the old paint was removed, full priming of the area ensures proper adhesion and a uniform finish.
