When back-priming is skipped on installation, moisture infiltrates the back face of siding boards, causing paint failure from the inside out. When flashing and caulk details fail at windows, doors, and wall penetrations, water enters behind the siding and saturates it from behind.

Virginia humidity. Northern Virginia averages humidity levels above 70 percent during much of the year, with summer months regularly exceeding 80 percent. Wood that’s exposed to sustained high humidity — especially in shaded locations or areas with poor air circulation — stays wet longer and is more prone to developing the fungal conditions that cause rot.

Freeze-thaw cycles. Water trapped in or behind siding expands when it freezes, mechanically splitting paint films, opening seams, and accelerating deterioration of both siding and the moisture barrier behind it.

Age. Homes built in the 1950s through 1980s — representing a significant portion of the housing stock in established Northern Virginia communities — have wood siding that’s 40 to 75 years old. Cedar Shingles and Shakes

Cedar shingles are common on older homes with Victorian, craftsman, or cottage architecture — particularly in historic neighborhoods like Old Town Alexandria and the older sections of Manassas and Fairfax City. They require careful installation with proper spacing and back-priming, and they create a distinctive aesthetic that’s difficult to match with alternative materials.

The Importance of Back-Priming

One of the most important factors in wood siding longevity is back-priming — applying primer to the back face of each siding board before it’s installed. This is a step that was frequently skipped on homes built in the 1970s and 1980s, contributing to the widespread paint failure and rot now visible on those homes’ siding.

Wood absorbs moisture through any unprimed face. Siding that’s primed and painted only on its exposed face will absorb moisture through its back, causing the wood to swell, the paint to fail from behind, and the board to deteriorate faster than properly primed siding would.
